Claudia Quintet at the Outpost
November 11th, 2008
The Claudia Quintet stopped by theĀ Outpost Performance Space on Thursday, November 6, 2008. I’ve know of this group for awhile, and was very happy to finally catch them. My drummer friend Gary Parra was pretty fired up after this very amazing performance. The music was very very good, and the ’show’ was fun!
With traps, double bass, vibes, accordian, and sax/clarinet, The Claudia Quintet delivers a unique music that sits somewhere between jazz and 20th century chamber. The compositions are very musical. The entire ensemble is used to great effect. The ensemble playing is alive with dynamics, movement, and personality. The line between arrangement and improvisation is not obvious.
To complete the experience, John Hollenbeck’s banter with the audience and with Tom Guaralnick was a good laugh. I hope Lubbock lives up to their expectactions, and I wish there was more performance videos on Youtube.
